Danube Symphony Orchestra

 

The Danube Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1961, in Budapest. DSO is one of professional state orchestra's of Hungary. 

​

Since its formation, has many of concerts in honoured venues in Hungary and international places as well. The orchestra’s  repertoire is very broad,  from Baroque to 20th century music including contemporary compositions.

Nowadays the orchestra is located in Kobanya district of Budapest and has two concert series in one season at the prestigous venue of Urania. Also they perform as other well-known concert venues such as: Royal Palace of Godollo, Urania, Festetics Palace and Liszt Academy of Music.

The DSO has about 4-5 concerts per month, yearly 50-70 performanses. Besides their classical repertoir of concert series they regularly perform live film screening symphony music. Their new very successful project is the Cinema and Symphony tour in Hungary.

The international connections of the orchestra date back more then three decades. At the international music field  they are known not just as a concert symphony orchestra, but as an accompanying orchestra to operetta, opera, ballet and oratorio performances. 

​

The orchestra has always attracted excellent players, many of whom have flourishing chamber music and teaching careers alongside their orchestral work. The orchestra’s principal conductor for three years is Gabor Horvath, professor at Liszt Music Academy as well. Nearly 40 years ago the orchestra started the „Danube concert” series, which was running with great success. These concerts are primarily intended to provide a selection of the best Hungarian music for visitors who are interested in Hungarian culture. The DSO still hold the tradition of the primary perform Hungarian classical and contemporary music as well and regularly invites well-known international and Hungarian and International guest soloists to perform at their concert.

The DSO also is the practice orchestra of the Liszt Music Academy's conducting department, they play in the auditions of conductors, practices and exams. Besides of their concert life the DSO run twenty years ago the Danube Conducting Masterclasses and Competitions. 

​

The orchestra is one of the founder member of the Association of Hungarian Symphony Orchestras. DSO won the Elgar society's prize and the Pro- Civibus award from the City of Budapest. â€‹

​

Their Artistic Director is Ferenc Szklenar.
